Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Security
Welcome to the Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Security, a unique undergraduate program taught at the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre (SDSC)!
SDSC has a long tradition in providing first-class university education in strategic studies. At the postgraduate level, we run a well-established Graduate Studies in Strategy & Defence (GSSD) program. In 2011, we launched the new Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Security to meet the growing demand for undergraduate programs in security and defence studies. Our teaching focuses on:
- key concepts of traditional and non-traditional security, and their application in the Asia-Pacific region;
- the major traditional strategic challenges in the region such as the rise of China, the future role of the United States, and the potential for war on the Korean Peninsula;
- the history of war and conflict in the Asia-Pacific, and the implications for today's security environment;
- the key challenges for Australia's security in the Asian Century and possible policy responses;
- the key internal security challenges facing the region, including secessionist movements in Indonesia as well as insurgencies in the Philippines and Thailand; and
- the key transnational security challenges in the Asia-Pacific such as terrorism, organised crime and conflicts over resources.
We provide students with the theoretical frameworks and the empirical background to understand these complex issues. By combining traditional and non-traditional security challenges we offer a comprehensive knowledge about the many security issues facing the region and Australia today. Our teaching faculty includes leading academics and shapers of strategic and security policy. Moreover, we make use of the exceptional broader academic expertise available in ANU's renowned College of Asia and the Pacific. You will therefore study a degree that is both analytically rigorous and practically relevant.
As the Director of Undergraduate Studies at SDSC, I invite you to join this exciting program.
