Sir Arthur Tange Scholarships: As Secretary of both the Department of External Affairs (1954–1965) and the Department of Defence (1970–1979), Sir Arthur Tange AC, CBE had a profound influence on Australian defence policy in the post-Second World War era. Honouring this role, the Sir Arthur Tange Scholarships provide support for candidates to complete a PhD on a topic with a strong bearing on Australia's long-term strategic and defence policy. Such topics could embrace Australian strategic interests and objectives, force structure priorities, operational issues, or capability development and management. Previous work supported by Sir Arthur Tange scholarships has included both historical and contemporary studies. The Sir Arthur Tange Scholarships provide a tax-free stipend (A$29,000 in 2010) for three years of full time study.

Only two Sir Arthur Tange Scholarships are available at any one time, and both are currently taken up. A new Sir Arthur Tange Scholarship is not expected to be available until the 2013 academic year.
